The lattice is called “Kimusuko” (insect cage made of wood).
The frontage is rather narrow but the inside is much larger than you think.
In the machiya you will find much usability and sense of beauty schemed in a long period.

Kanazawa is famous for tea ceremony and many people enjoy it.
There are also many people who can recite Noh chants. Kanazawa is said to be a place where “Noh chants fall from the heaven.”
How about having hands-on experiences at the machiya?
We have programs such as tea ceremony, flower arrangement, Noh chant, and kimono-wearing class.
We are sure that you can enjoy the tasteful elegance of Kaga-Hyakumangoku.
(The name “Hyakumangoku” signifies the extreme wealth of the Kaga province, which has one million koku, or five million bushels of rice.)

To know culture in Kanazawa, you can invite lecturers to the machiya and have 2-hour lessons. We have several programs: tea ceremony, flower arrangement, Noh chant, calligraphy, and kimono-wearing class with a rental kimono.

お茶屋のご紹介 Introduction to an Ochaya: 金沢の商家の旦那衆は茶屋に出かけると、芸妓衆の舞や三味線を愛で、芸妓から太鼓の手ほどきを受けて楽しんだといいます。
茶屋での遊興を希望される方には、お茶屋さんを紹介させていただきます。

We can introduce you to an Ochaya if you would like a banquet.
Ochaya includes dance and Shamisen performances by geisha girls.
And they would learn basic Japanese drum performances and enjoy playing drums with geisha girls.

Near the machiya there are such tasteful spots as old streets, gardens, shrines and temples, and distinctive museums.
Some provide you an opportunity to experience making traditional art crafts, others show you traditional performances.
Each season you can enjoy cultural events.

加賀百万石の歴史を伝える金沢城公園や兼六園。古九谷や加賀藩ゆかりの美術品を展示する石川県立美術館。現代アートミュージアムとして世界的に注目を集める金沢21世紀美術館。土塀の続く武家屋敷界隈…。名前をあげていくと、きりがないほどにご覧になっていただきたい場所が金沢にはたくさんあります。
金沢は運よく大きな災害に遭わずに歴史を重ねてきました。ふと迷い込んだ路地に、ほのぼのとした暮らしの温もりを感じることもあるかもしれません。ぜひ、ゆっくりと金沢の街を散策してください。

There are too many sightseeing spots to visit in Kanazawa.
Kanazawa Castle Park and Kenrouku-en Garden tell you the long history of Kanazawa. In Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, they show Old-Kutani potteries and art crafts that the Maeda lords once possessed. Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art attracts attention from all over the world. Earthen wall in Nagamachi has castle-town atmosphere.
Luckily, Kanazawa had no large casualties. You will feel the warm atmosphere of generations of residents as you walk down the old streets lined with preserved houses. Please take much time to stroll.

楽しむ Enjoy events and performances

春、咲き誇る桜の下で”水芸”や芸妓衆の舞が披露される浅の川園遊会。初夏、凛々しい鎧兜の利家公一行のパレードが人気の百万石まつり。11月の声を聞くと、兼六園の巨樹・古木を守るための雪吊り作業が始まり、2月には、冬に別れを告げ春を呼ぶ宇多須神社の節分行事。金沢には、季節を彩る趣豊かな祭りやイベントがあり、地蔵盆や人形供養など、暮らしに密着した行事も連綿と受け継がれています。
また、石川県立能楽堂では毎年、「観能の夕べ」や「能楽講座」を開催。石川県立音楽堂では、金沢が誇る室内管弦楽団「オーケストラ・アンサンブル金沢」の定期公演も行われます。金沢でなければ触れることのできない行事や公演等をお楽しみいただければと思います。

In spring you can enjoy Asanogawa Enyukai. Under cherry blossoms they show (Mizugei), or the water performances, and elegant dances of Geisha girls. In early summer you can enjoy the Hyakumangoku Parade. The parade reenacts the triumphal entrance of Lord Meda and his entourage into Kanazawa. Lord Maeda Toshiie in armour and the men parade through the city. When in November, Yukitsuri work begins in Kenrokuen garden (one of Japan’s top three most beautiful gardens) to protect and preserve the countless old and beautiful trees all over the city. In February Setsubun festival is held. At the Utasu Shrine, beans are scattered to farewell winter and welcome spring.
In Kanazawa we have various events and festivals in each season. Familiar events such as Jizo Bon and Ningyo-kuyo, or a memorial services for dolls, come down to our generation. Every year at Ishikawa Ongakudo, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa gives regular concerts. Three events are certain to delight you and we hope that through them you will gain a deeper understanding of the rich culture of Kanazawa.

習い事を体験する Why don’t you try hands-on experience?

九谷焼や加賀友禅、金箔工芸等は長い歴史の中でその美しさと技術に磨きをかけてきた金沢の伝統工芸です。市内には工房見学をしたり、九谷焼絵付け、金箔貼りや加賀友禅の彩色、着物着用などの体験ができる施設があります。公的な施設で、和菓子作り教室や染色や版画などの体験教室が開催されることもあります。（不定期）さまざまな体験を通して、金沢の奥深い文化に触れてみませんか。

Kutani pottery, Kaga Yuzen, and Kinpaku-kogei are traditional crafts that have long histories. In Kanazawa there are some facilities where we can see the craft centers and have hands-on experiences such as over grazed decoration, making gold-leaf crafts, learning Yuzen process, and wearing kimono. At some public facilities there are also hands-on experiences like making Japanese cakes (wagashi) and dyeing, and block print, which are not held regularly. You will have a unique chance to witness the refined culture through experience after experience.
